Closing Labor Day Weekend Features 8 Stakes Races at Saratoga

Historic Saratoga concludes its summer meet this weekend with a Labor Day weekend special. The holiday weekend card features 8 stakes races including the $350,000 Spinaway Stakes – A Breeders’ Cup ‘Win and You’re In’ Challenge Series race. The Spinaway anchors the NBC Sports Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series broadcast at Saratoga.

The $300,000 Saranac Stakes in Race 9 starts the Saturday stakes at Saratoga, and nine 3-year-olds are entered to run in the 1 1/8 mile race on the turf.

The Spinaway follows in Race 10 with post time at 6:11pm ET. Just five 2-year-old fillies are entered, and Pure Silver (1-1) and Separationofpowers (6-5) are the two favorites expected to decide the winner.

The big boys run next in Race 11, the $750,000 Woodward Stakes. Only four decided to challenge Steve Asmussen-trained Gun Runner (2-5) in the 1 1/8 mile race. But trainer Todd Pletcher will send out a pair and try to pull the upset with Rally Cry (5-2) and Neolithic (6-1).

The $200,000 Glens Falls Stakes (G3) for fillies and mares will finish the late Pick 4 in Race 12 at Saratoga. The favorite War Flag (3-1) will shoot for her first North American stakes win in the final event on the 12-race card.

Racing fans will return to Saratoga Sunday and Monday, as the $350,000 Hopeful Stakes (G1) headlines closing Labor Day with 2-year-olds racing 7 furlongs on the turf.

Other stakes races this weekend at Saratoga include:

  • Friday – $100,000 Lucky Coin – 5 ½ furlongs on the turf
  • Sunday – $250,000 Prioress (G2) – 6 furlongs
  • Monday – $250,000 Bernard Baruch (G2) – 1 1/16 miles on the turf
