The inaugural Rood & Riddle Comeback Award was given to Wise Dan, a former two-time Horse of the Year. The newly minted prize is awarded by the equine hospital in Lexington, Kentucky of the same name. The award given to an equine athlete who overcame a major health complication and returned to elite competition.
Plans to present the award include a tribute at the the Hats Off to Kentucky’s Horse Industry Day on July 30 at the Kentucky Horse Park.
Wise Dan compiled an astonishing record 23-2-0 over 31 starts during a racing career that spanned from 2010 thru 2015. He returned for his eight-year old season in the year prior to his retirement after receiving colic surgery in 2014. The now nine-year old gelding finished his career on a five race winning streak that included triumphs at the Breeders’ Cup Sprint, Woodward Reserve Turf and Shadwell Turf Mile. He also owns two other Breeders’ Cup victories and two Woodbine Mile wins as well. He is by and large a truly appropriate selection for the Rood & Riddle Comeback Award.
“We are pleased to present the inaugural Rood & Riddle Comeback Award to Wise Dan. Wise Dan exemplifies the characteristics of an outstanding athlete who suffered a major health issue and returned to compete successfully,” said Dr. Tom Riddle who represented the hopsital which bares his name and the comittee that selected Wise Dan as the premier recepient.
“Wise Dan is a remarkable athlete and we are excited for him to receive this award. For him to recover from major surgery and come back to the level of competition he did and in such a short time is truly remarkable,” said trainer Charles LoPresti. “Rood & Riddle played a large part in Wise Dan’s success, specifically Drs. Bramlage and Hopper. We are thankful to the entire Rood & Riddle team.”
