Bolt d’ Oro Captures San Felipe on Disqualification & Long shot Quip Surprises in Tampa Bay Derby
The Road to the Kentucky Derby produced some more surprises Saturday. The much-anticipated showdown in the San Felipe (G2) between two of the most highly-regarded Kentucky Derby contenders played out as expected with a sizzling stretch duel between the two race favorites McKinzie and Bolt d’ Oro. But the close 1-2 finish had a surprise ending following a 10 minute delay. McKinzie had crossed the finish line first, but a stewards inquiry resulted in a disqualification to 2nd for McKinzie with Bolt d’ Oro declared the winner on a rainy day at Santa Anita. Down in Florida, a bigger surprise and result was unfolding Saturday, as big long shot Quip stamped his ticket to the Kentucky Derby with another thrilling finish to win the Tampa Bay Derby (G2). And Enticed left no doubt he’s a Derby contender with a 2 ¾ length win in the Gotham Stakes (G3) at Aqueduct.
Bolt d’ Oro won for the 4th time in five starts with a pair of Grade 1 wins and 3rd place in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. He was the single-entry favorite of 23 Derby hopefuls offered in the weekends Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 3 that closed March 11.
Quip won his third race in four starts following a 7th place finish in the Kentucky Jockey Club (G2) in his last start in November. That race was won by Enticed, who captured Saturday’s Gotham Stakes (G3) at Aqueduct to also secure his spot in the May 5 Kentucky Derby.
