Uncle Mo Ever Present In 2016 Preakness Stakes

Preakness Stakes, Racing news, Triple Crown

It’s been an undeniably great year for the retired Uncle Mo, who is owned by Mark Repole and bred by Coolmore Stud. He ran three sons in the 2016 Kentucky Derby, with undefeated Nyquist earning the victory. There was plenty of stories about how his offspring were battling against those of champion breeder Tapit, who also had three contenders in the race.

Tapit’s sons, however, are nowhere to be seen in the 2016 Preakness Stakes field and the stock for Uncle Mo continues to build exponentially.

Nyquist will lead the way as the heavy 3/5 preference by the oddsmakers. He will shoot out of the gates next to half-brother Uncle Lino, who is a longshot at 20/1. Another pair of Uncle Mo’s sons are Laoban and Abiding Star, who will also crack the race side-by-side though both are distant 30/1 odds holders themselves.

It is a massive outcome for Repole who has remained heavily invested in the care of Uncle Mo. “It makes it so much more special, because I knew Uncle Mo would be a one-in-a-generation type horse, and that he’s still giving to us through his babies … it’s special,” he said after Nyquist’s Kentucky Derby win two weeks ago.

Uncle Mo was an undefeated two-year old, and was an early favorite for the Triple Crown series in 2011 before a stomach infection completely derailed his bid. Repole’s faith in his pedigree and talent has only now begun to pay off. The breeding rights for his former protegé will only skyrocket as Nyquist continues to dominate.

The battle of the breeders is certainly an intriguing element to the sport, and right now the new kid on the block is beating the gold standard by every metric. The full Preakness Stakes field can be seen below. Nyquist is the lead favorite with Exaggerator, a son of Curlin, standing as the second choice.
