Five-year old Tepin began her 2016 season at the 2016 Endeavour Stakes much like she ended last year – with a victory.
It was a marvellously paced effort by jockey Julien Leparoux who stalked out of the gates before obliterating the field down the stretch. Nobody else in the 2016 Endeavour Stakes stood a chance.”They went slow the first part, which was great, and she relaxed beautiful and finished up strong,” Leparoux gleaned. “There is nothing much I can say except that was perfect. She’s got a big heart and she had a great kick at the end.” The tactics were favoured by trainer Mark Casse, who was obviously thrilled with the outcome. “That is what is so great about her,” Casse said jubilantly. “Julien can kind of do whatever he needs to do, and if they are running slow, she’ll relax. You’re always nervous coming back, but she’s back.”
Tepin crushed the 1 1/6 mile distance in 1:42.91 which was a shade slower than her her previous two runs at this length. She had previously posted times in the 1:39 range at the Ballstan Spa Stakes and Gulfstream allowance.
As a 1/5 favourite in the 2016 Endeavour Stakes, Tepin paid out $2.60, $2.10 and $2.10. Lady Lara climbed in to second place to reward her backers $3.40 and $2.60. Lady Loyree set the pace early but fell back to third and paid out $4.20.
Jason Litt was ecstatic about the results and revealed the future plans for Tepin following her dominant run at the 2016 Endeavour Stakes. “The ultimate goal is the Breeders’ Cup at the end of the year, but our first major goal with her is the Maker’s 46 Mile at Keeneland. She kind of likes Keeneland. That will be against the boys, so I think we’ll try them again.” The Maker’s 46 Mile runs on April 15th.
Tepin has long been one of the favourites amongst horse players since her she blossomed in her 2015 campaign with wins at the Distaff Turf Mile hosted by Churchill Downs, the Just A Game, First Lady Stakes and the Breeders’ Cup Mile. Her brilliant performance at the 2016 Endeavour Stakes will definitely make her appearances at later races this season all the more interesting.
