Scat Daddy Honored By Final Crop in 2018 Derby

Kentucky Derby

We’ll never know how good Scat Daddy may have been, but we’ll get a glimpse of what his progeny are capable of in the 2018 Triple Crown. At least three contenders for the Kentucky Derby will pack the gates as they honor their father, and in a rather rare turn of events two of them are the listed favorites. This is another major triumph for American breeding, which has been struggling since the subprime, economic collapse in 2007.

cheap cialis uk next day delivery Scat Daddy himself ran in just 9 races and went 5-1-1 with $1,334,300 in career earnings. He won the 2007 Florida Derby en route to the Kentucky Derby, where he went off as the third favorite behind Curlin and Street Sense, the latter of which won the race in style. Curlin himself has gone on to become one of the most prominent names in breeding. Now he’s being joined by a former rival.

An unfortunate injury dogged Scat Daddy in the derby when he was violently bumped incidentally, tearing a tendon that forced him to retire from the sport. Now, his last set of offspring are starting to peak and they are proving to be serious threats to be crowned champions in the Kentucky Derby.

Both Justify and Mendelssohn have been absolutely sensational in proving their worth along the derby trail. Justify crushed Bolt d’Oro in the 2018 Santa Anita Derby, and proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that he deserved the recognition he received leading up to his first stakes race. At a perfect 3-0-0, Justify ended derby futures wagering as the overall favorite at 3/1.

Right behind him is Mendelssohn, the highly touted 5/1 second choice who comes in to the Kentucky Derby after decimating the field in the UAE Derby. Mendelssohn won by a staggering 18 1/2 lengths at Meydan Racecourse, and has garnered much attention largely because he was acquired by Phoenix Thoroughbreds for a whopping $3,000,000. Mendelssohn also enters the 2018 Kentucky Derby as the highest overall earner with just over $1.9 million in the bank.

The third Scat Daddy colt who will also appear at Churchill Downs in a few weeks is Flameaway, who placed second in the 2018 Blue Grass Stakes. While not nearly as highly regarded as his half-brothers, Flameaway has been a much appreciated bet by horse players due to his consistency.

The intense obligation on Justify and Mendelssohn will be ever present, but the fact that they represent the final crop of Scat Daddy increases the stakes so to speak. Scat Daddy passed away on December 15th, 2015 at the age of 11 years old. No better way to honor thy father than by winning the biggest contest in American racing.
