Autumn Meet at Santa Anita Starts this Weekend with Five Breeders’ Cup Prep Races
Autumn racing begins at Santa Anita Park Friday, Sept. 29 for a 19-day meet that will be highlighted by a huge day of racing on Saturday, Sept. 30. The $100,000 Eddie D Stakes drew a field of 11 Friday, and Om is a heavy 8-5 favorite over 5-furlong spring specialist Tribalist (4-1). The 6 1/2 furlong race down the hillside turf course is the final race of nine on Friday’s opening day.
But Saturday is a special day or racing at Santa Anita, as five ‘Win and You’re In‘ Breeders’ Cup prep races will showcase some of the talented colts and fillies that will be running at the Breeders’ Cup World Championships in five weeks at Del Mar.
The $300,000 Zenyatta Stakes opens the Breeders’ Cup bonanza in Race 5 with six fillies and mares entered for the 1 1/16 mile trek. The winner receives the automatic invite to the $2 million Longines Distaff.
Race 7 is the $300,000 Chandelier Stakes for 2-year-old fillies also going 1 1/16 miles on the dirt. Eight are entered and the winner receives the invitation to the $2 million 14 Hands Winery Juvenile Fillies.
Race 8 is the $300,000 Frontrunner Stakes for 2-year-olds at 1 1/16 miles. A total of nine entered with Bolt d’ Oro and Zatter renewing their rivalry after Bolt d’ Oro won the Del Mar Futurity Sept. 4. The winner not only receives an auto-entry to the $2 million Sentient Jet Juvenile but also 10 points towards qualifying on the Road to the Kentucky Derby.
Race 9 is the $300,000 Rodeo Drive Stakes for fillies and mares going a classic distance of 1 1/4 miles on the turf. The winner moves on to the $2 million Filly & Mare Turf.
The $300,000 Awesome Again is for 3-year-olds and up contested at 1 1/8 miles. The winner draws an entry to the $6 million Classic .
