Sam Houston’s 32-Date Season Features $400,000 Houston Ladies Classic Jan. 28

San Houston Race Park opened its 25th racing season Friday night, and the Saturday night card continues with more than just horse racing. The 6 p.m. program will mix cheaper races with ostrich and camel dashes.

“We’re starting the season with ostrich and camel events because they get so much attention,” longtime track Vice President Berube said. “That’s what we want on our first weekend.”

Sam Houston has ambitiously dropped Monday programs and shifted those to Wednesday. In addition to one Sunday, the 32-date season offers racing on five Tuesdays, eight Wednesdays, nine Fridays and nine Saturdays with evening starts on Friday and Saturday.

Elite runners dominate the second weekend. On. Jan. 27, Texas-breds will compete in four $50,000 features.

On Jan. 28 – the meet’s only Sunday afternoon card – the $400,000 Houston Ladies Classic offers what appears to be the nation’s biggest purse that day as a check of Santa Anita, Fair Grounds, Gulfstream and Aqueduct schedules reveals no other purse approaching $400,000.

Listed as probable entrants for the Houston Ladies Classic are the top-2 finishers in the 2016 $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies – Champagne Room And Valladorna. Champagne Room was a 33-1 long shot winner that day and paid $69.20 with a $1 exacta payoff of $361.80.

Big scores happened at Sam Houston on opening weekend last year when a Twinspires employee and Brisnet race analyst scored a $25,000 Pick 4.

The Sunday, Jan. 28 program also includes a $200,000 grass race, the Connally Turf, and four other stakes races with payoffs as great as $75,000.

With just a 12% takeout and a 10% winners bonus through Twinspires.com, Sam Houston is a best bet for horse players
