It’s been a good run for James McIngvale’s Runhappy recently. On October 31st, Runhappy took home the TwinSpires Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Keeneland, and this morning at the Central Kentucky track it ran five furlongs in an impressive :57 seconds.
Runhappy is Super Saver’s three-year old son and is in the process of preparing for a stop at Santa Anita Park on December 26 for the Malibu Stakes.
Trainer Laura Wohlers was pleased with today’s results: “It was pretty strong — :57 [seconds] flat and he galloped out in 1:10 and change.” Wohlers went on to add, “I wasn’t going to go quite that quick with him. The track was beautiful. You could barely hear him getting over it this morning.”
Runhappy was vanned over to Keeneland from the Thoroughbred Training Center in Lexington, Kentucky. Wholers “wanted to come to Keeneland and run over a bigger track that has better turns.”
Today was also a chance to prepare in solid weather conditions, as Wohlers mentioned a possibility of rain next week. They wanted to ensure Runhappy got at least one run in before being scheduled to ship on December 3rd to Southern California, where he will stay at trainer Bob Hess’ Santa Anita barn.
Earlier we mentioned the Kentucky-bred Runhappy’s previous win at the TwinSpires Breeders’ Cup Sprint in October, but he’s also on a current five-race win streak that dates back to the beginning of July. Win or lose, Runhappy will be taking a month-long break at Wohlers’ Texas farm following the Malibu Stakes.
