Trainers Steve Asmussen and J. Larry Jones each have three horses entered and both have solid contenders. Asmussen’s Principe Guilherme (5-2) is the favorite breaking from the 12 post, and he also has Snapper Sinclair (20-1) and Zing Zang (15-1). Jones has two solid contenders in Kowboy Karma (6-1) and Prince Lucky (8-1) along with Believe in Royalty (15-1). Mark Casse-trained filly Wonder Gadot (6-1) and Jerry Hollendorder’s Instilled Regard (4-1) are the other top betting contenders. Named after the 1850s racehorse Lecomte, the Lecomte Stakes is the first of three races in the Fair Grounds’ Kentucky Derby prep series for 3-year-olds. Runners from the Lecomte Stakes frequently run in the other Fair Grounds Derby preps, the Risen Star Stakes (G2) and the Louisiana Derby (G2). Horses to have won all three races include International Star and Friesan Fire.

The most recent winners of the Lecomte Stakes include Mo Tom (2016), who went on to finish 3rd in the Risen Star, 4th in the Twinspires.com Louisiana Derby and 8th in the Kentucky Derby. The 2017 Lecomte winner was Guest Suite, who had a perfect closing trip on a wet Fair Grounds Racecourse to win as the 5-2 favorite. He finished 4th in the Risen Star and 7th in the Louisiana Derby.
