Thanksgiving Day is First Chance to Wager on 2018 Kentucky Derby Future Pool

Pari-mutuel win wagering on the 2018 Kentucky Derby begins on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 23. Race fans and bettors looking to wager on horses at a bigger price can bet one of two wagering options in Pool 1. The Kentucky Derby Future Wager is available at Churchill Downs and other racetracks and satellite wagering centers across North America and will be offered online by

There are 23 individual horses plus “All Others” as the 24th betting choice.

At 7-5 odds, “All Others” is the most likely outcome in 2018 Kentucky Derby, but sharp bettors won’t be interested in what will be at or just below even money on race day.

The two horses expected to take most the betting action in Pool 1 is Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Good Magic (8-1) and Bolt d’ Oro (10-1), who was the odds-on favorite in the BC Juvenile and finished third. While both have shown superior talent and should continue their development at longer distances, it’s still too early for astute bettors to be taking a price of 10-1 or less.

If you’re looking for a colt at longer odds that should progress and has a Derby winning trainer in Bob Baffert, then consider McKinzie (20-1), who broke his maiden Oct. 28 at Santa Anita. Baffert also has two others 2-year-olds listed in Pool 1 in Talent Scout (30-1) and Solomimi (15-1), the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile runner-up who will also take some solid betting action in the Future Wager pool.

The Kentucky Derby Future Wager (KDFW) is an opportunity for fans to bet early in the racing season on horses whom they think have the potential to earn a spot in the starting gate and go on to win the Kentucky Derby. Future Wager bets typically offer larger payouts than betting the same horse on race day because it is not yet known which horses will ultimately qualify to run in the Derby.

Several of the wagering interests in Pool 1 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager will be in action over the next three weeks in Saturday’s $200,000 Kentucky Jockey Club (G2) at Churchill Downs, the $250,000 Remsen (G2) at Aqueduct on December 2 and the $300,000 Los Alamitos CashCall Futurity (G1) on December 9.
