Gun Runner has at least passed Arrogate in one important place as the four-year-old colt has moved in to the top spot of the September World Horse Rankings by the National Thoroughbred Racehorse Association. Though the Steve Asmussen trainee has never beaten Arrogate head on, he seems to be gaining a ton of momentum ahead of the 2017 Breeders’ Cup which will be hosted by Del Mar in November.
There are 40 potential first-place votes amongst all pollsters, and 35 of those went to Gun Runner. Arrogate took four of them, while someone awarded West Coast a point given his win in the 5-2-0 record over 7 starts this season with a win in the Travers Stakes.
The September World Horse Rankings are as follows:
- Gun Runner (395)
- Arrogate (345)
- Lady Eli (2421)
- Collected (232)
- Stellar Wind (216)
- Mor Spirit (121)
- West Coast (110)
- Drefong (106)
- Forever Unbridled (79)
- Songbird (72)
Of the female runners cracking the top-10, Lady Eli was ranked the highest. She moved one spot up from fourth in the last rendition of these polls to switch places with 2017 Pacific Classic stunner Collected. Stellar Wind held fast at fifth thanks to her three wins this season in the Apple Blossom, Beholder Handicap and Clement L. Hirsch.
Meanwhile, Songbird dropped to 10th after her recent loss in the Personal Ensign, but has also recently retired due to injury which may have impacted her standing. The champion filly and two-time Eclipse Award winner will head for sale at Falsig Tipton having gone 13-2-0 in an unbelievable career that featured 15 starts. Her total winnings will cap at $4,692,000.
Mor Spirit is the only horse that hasn’t run all summer after winning the Met Mile back in June. The four-year-old colt is expected to compete in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile through his automatic berth.
All ten horses in the September World Horse Rankings were in the last release, they merely shuffled order with nobody dropping more so than Songbird. West Coast moved from 9th to 7th to earn the biggest leap of any contender.
