The Robert J. Frankel Stakes (gr. IIIT) at Santa Anita Park was a momentous career achievement for Gender Agenda, as it was her first career stakes victory.
Holy Roman Emperor’s four-year-old daughter had broke on top in the 1 1/8-mile event. However, she fell into second place behind favourite Glory, until she made her way to the front of the pack, where she she held on to the win over Stormy Lucy. In 18 career starts, Gender Agenda is now 5-3-3, and has earned $287,108.
It looked as though Glory was set for the win, after setting the pace with fractions of :24.16, :49.17, and 1:14.35 through the first six furlongs, but it was Gender Agenda in a close finish who snatched away the victory in a final time of 1:50.29.
“I was afraid we were going to be too close to the lead, but when I saw the slow pace I knew we were OK,” said jockey Rafael Bejarano. “Out of the gate, I let the favorite (Glory) go and tried to force her to the lead. I just put us second and followed them. After that, it wasn’t going to be my fault, because I knew we were getting a perfect trip in that spot.”
At 10-1 odds, Gender Agenda paid $23.80, $10.40, and $6.80. Runner-up Stormy Lucy returned $5.80 and $4.20, while third-place Glory brought $3.80.
The rest of the completed race finish: Rusty Slipper, Three Hearts, Alexis Tangier, Fresh Feline, Warren’s Veneda, Peace and War, Gas Total, Star Act, Honey Ride.
