Exaggerator Draws Post 11 in Belmont

Race Preview

The Belmont Stakes field has been drawn, with Preakness Stakes (gr. I) winner Exaggerator drawing post 11 in the 13-horse field. He was given 9-5 morning-line odds, making him the favorite to win the third leg of the Triple Crown.

Exaggerator will be inside of Brody’s Cause (post 12, 20-1 odds) and Creator (post 13, 10-1 odds). His post 11 drawing wasn’t something that made trainer Keith Desormeaux all too excited.

“The gates here are placed around the wire, which means there’s not that much of a run-up,” said Desormeaux. “It’s not as inconsequential as it is in the other two races, so I’d prefer not to be on the outside, because we have to take back and drop in. Three-sixteenths (to the turn) is a decent run, but not enough—not enough to say that the gates don’t matter.”

Keith’s brother Kent, who happens to also be Exaggerator’s rider, didn’t seem to be as upset about the draw.

“I think it’s a wonderful post position,” said Kent Desormeaux. “I can’t see any horses that will cross over on him. (We should be) able to establish position, preferably, without getting a grain of sand in his face.”

The second-favorite is Stradivari at 5-1 odds. He drew post 5. Destin, who skipped the Preakness following a sixth-place Kentucky Derby finish, is the third-favorite at 6-1 odds. He will be running out of post 2.
