Favored in the Preakness, Always Dreaming Gaining Steam on Triple Crown Odds
Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming is picking up stream nearing the stretch in his run for the Triple Crown. Prior to the Kentucky Derby, the odds for any horse to win the Triple Crown were widely available at:
Following his victory in the Kentucky Derby, Always Dreaming’s Odds to Win the Triple Crown range from:
Yes: +300 (3-1) to +335
at major bookmakers William Hill, Bovada and Bookmaker.
Always Dreaming will stride for his 5th straight win this year when he goes to the gate as the favorite at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, MD May 20. While the morning line odds are not yet set by the track oddsmaker, but both Bookmaker and Bovada have made Always Dreaming near a 4-5 favorite (-123), while other outlets including Las Vegas have Always Dreaming either an Even Money or 6-5 favorite in the Preakness.
Last year’s Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist finished 3rd in the Preakness, while 2015 Preakness winner American Pharoah went on to become the first Triple Crown winner in 37 years; proving how difficult it is to win three races in five weeks to become a Triple Crown champion.
Consider also that Always Dreaming came out of relative obscurity to win the Florida Derby and qualify for the Kentucky Derby. A little over a month prior to the Florida Derby, Always Dreaming was offered at 50-1 odds to win the Kentucky Derby in the Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 3.
The ability to project young horse’s improvement is always a challenge, and even at age 3, most of these beautiful animals and talented runners are still learning and maturing. That includes the Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming, who has looked better each time he runs. Always Dreaming profile and pedigree is strong, as his sire is Bodemeister, who finished 2nd in both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. Always Dreaming also has Triple Crown winners Secretariat and Seattle Slew along with Derby winner Northern Dancer on his sires side. The odds on Always Dreaming to win the biggest races have dropped considerably since February, and they’ll drop to near Even Money to complete the Triple Crown at Belmont should Always Dreaming not stumble and show improvement again to win the Preakness.
