http://mgrboston.com/?grp=General Interest The 2017 Breeders’ Cup handle from Del Mar’s on-track report has set a new record for the event. With $25,181,317 in total action, the world championships shattered the benchmark set in 2016 by a whopping 21.4 percent.
http://rejuvalon.com/wp-content/themes/Gleam/epanel/shortcodes/js/et_shortcodes_frontend.dev.js?_=1558869528402 A report on all-sources handle gave a total amount wagered of $113,803,603. This is also a slight increase from all-sources compared to last year, but the margin is only about 6.1 percent above the 2016 Breeders’ Cup Handle from all sources.
What makes the 2017 Breeders’ Cup handle so remarkable is that it also stomped the previous record set by the 2010 Breeders’ Cup hosted at Churchill Downs, which included two additional races.
This was the first time that Del Mar hosted the Breeders’ Cup, and CEO Craig Revel couldn’t be happier with how the 2017 renewal turned out. “We were treated to world-championship performances over two days of the very best in international racing, combined with spectacular weather, smooth operations, and excellent customer service from our hosts at Del Mar,” said Fravel. “Del Mar proved to be an extraordinary venue for our championships, and we want to thank its staff, our volunteers, and the greater San Diego community for the warm welcome and gracious hospitality extended to our guests from around the world. We also want to thank racing fans for their enthusiastic support of our event.”
Joe Harper, who is President of the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, echoed those sentiments. “I could not be more proud of the effort that was put forth by everyone at our racetrack, and all the folks in San Diego who jumped on board for this marvelous event and made it into something spectacular. This was racing at its best, it was Del Mar at its best, and it was San Diego being all it could be. It was a complete winner.”
The total attendance for the two days was 70,420, which makes the on-track 2017 Breeders’ Cup handle numbers even more impressive. Del Mar is a smaller venue compared to places like Churchill Downs and Santa Anita which have the built-in ability to expand capacity.
Considering how well Del Mar hosted the event, it won’t be surprising to see a return affair down the road. The 2018 Breeders’ Cup will be hosted by Churchill Downs.
